More and More Women Are Dying in Childbirth, But Only in America – Sarah Frostenson: Vox
According to Sarah Frostenson of Vox in our “Best Article of the Week” more women are dying in childbirth in the US than in any other developed country, with experts indicating the problem is likely to keep getting worse.
While hemorrhage, pregnancy induced blood pressure spikes and other immediate emergent health concerns were previously, and in many areas of the world, were and are the leading cause of death among pregnant women, the story is different for those in North America.
Diabetes, underlying heart disease, as well as other chronic diseases are now the concerns of pregnancy, a true reflection of the state of Western health.
A focus on health during pregnancy is integral to the health of our future generations but this stage of a woman’s life is not simply an isolated phase.
