Why Reinventing Hospital Food Isn’t As Easy As It Sounds – Gigen Mammoser

It’s a question many of you have maybe wondered; “why is hospital food often so unhealthy?”

As major institutions of healthcare our hospitals and medical facilities should be at the forefront of knowledge concerning nutrition. Establishing dietary supports should be a no-brainer in these institutions as we are all aware of the benefits that come with healthy eating. Unfortunately, like most things in life, this may be easier said than done.

Our “Best Article of the Week” comes to us from Gigen Mammoser at Vice and explains some of the limitations that hospitals, and those looking to make change, face when it comes to what’s served up on patient’s plates. From a lack of cultural options to procedural restrictions there are many roadblocks to serving up healthy options in our hospitals that need to be addressed.

Nonetheless, “our institutions are a reflection of who we are as a society, [they] should be more than that. [They] should be more aspirational,” and overcoming these limitations is of the utmost importance, especially when it comes to one of the most important contributors to our health.
