The Problem With Breastfeeding Compensations for Tongue/ Lip Tie – Bobby Ghaheri
To me, one of the most influential aspects of Naturopathic medicine is its focus on preventative medicine and its ability to see the “whole picture”. These attributes are highlighted in our “Best Article of the Week” this week in an editorial by Bobby Ghaheri, which speaks to the need to identify certain feeding compensations, the result of the structural constraints of tongue-tie, in the infant population.
For those of us who are familiar with the condition, we know that resolving a tongue-tie can be essential to the infant’s latch and subsequent weight gain, helping them progress along a normal growth curve.
According to Ghaheri, however, resolving a tongue-tie goes beyond this, and that while an infant with an unresolved tongue-tie may follow a normal growth pattern, the compensations they develop in order to maintain their growth may also put them at risk of potential intraoral restrictions.
Definitely an interesting read that keeps in mind the preventative and global developmental picture that is a cornerstone of Naturopathic medicine and crucial to the long term health of our smallest clients.
