The Top Article of the Week

Fatal Mistakes – Sarah Kliff, Vox

Where do we go when we fail? As medical professionals we are taught to hold a certain confidence when we speak to our peers and patients. During school we were pushed to our limits and tested repeatedly so that we would be prepared for any situation. Yet no matter how seasoned we become, we are still practicing medicine; we all have doubts and we all make mistakes.

After finishing my fourth year of medical school with a confidence that I would be able to see patients on my own, I was surprised to face crippling anxiety around potentially doing harm to any of my patients. With malpractice looming over my head and no one to check in with, putting my heart into patient care and trusting my intuition was overshadowed by doubt and fear.

The article we chose for “Best of the Week” features the story of a nurse who made a fatal mistake with a patient, and how feeling isolated in her errors without support from her community lead to her taking her own life. Thankfully our profession is often more supportive than the conventional medicine field; perhaps rooted in our understanding that many answers aren’t black and white. We have multiple forums where we can communicate with each other regarding difficult cases, and unfamiliar modalities and pathologies, but we are still held to an extremely high standard by our profession, our patients, and ourselves. This article and the tragedy it recalls encourages us to overcome our pride, confide in our colleagues, and empower our profession. I hope this article gives you the courage to reach out to colleagues the next time you make a mistake and to be supportive of your colleagues when they make theirs.
